Episode 153: The Surprising Path Beyond Depression, Anxiety, and Fatigue with Kelly Brogan, MD, author of Own Your Self

Listen on iTunes and Subscribe!

While I love sharing ideas that are against the grain, I rarely go full-on controversial.

But today, I am.

To be honest, I’m squirming as I write this because my central nervous system has trouble with the inner explosion that happens when someone has been offended by something I’ve said or an idea I’ve shared.

My husband, on the other hand, is built differently. With Scorpio rising, he goes right for the truth in an at-times-shocking way and is far less (and sometimes not at all) concerned about what other people think.

So here’s the deal:

We have an incredibly important podcast episode for you today that is going to piss off some people in our community and also has the potential to save some of their lives.

If you choose to listen in, would you be willing to do the following?

  • Know that everything shared by our guest is grounded in evidence and if you choose to learn more, you’ll be amazed by how much data backs up these unconventional ideas.
  • Know that I do not believe there is one right thing for everyone (nor does our guest). So, please know that if what is shared in this episode challenges the choices you’ve made but you feel really good about those choices and they’re working for you, I celebrate that with all of my heart.
  • Know that if what is shared on this episode challenges some of the choices you’ve made and you are pissed off, but there’s also a part of you that knows that those choices aren’t entirely working for you, then dig into the resources shared.

That’s a lot of preamble. That’s how nervous I am.

This episode is about mental health and psychiatric drugs and the pharmaceutical industry in general, and there is critical information shared that you need to know as a human to have informed consent about what goes into your body.

Also, the beliefs shared in this episode are not in any way the party line. It’s why our guest, the brilliant NY Times bestselling author, Dr. Kelly Brogan, has been launching her revolutionary new book, Own Your Self, in a grassroots way. Her ideas are so groundbreaking (and controversial) that she knew she wouldn’t be waltzing onto The Dr. Oz Show or any other major media (because hi, hello, they’re funded by pharmaceutical advertising dollars).

Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode:

  • The truth about chemical imbalances and the shocking discovery made from 6 decades of research
  • Why the information you get on Google is completely biased and how to find the truth
  • How to send your body signals of safety to turn on your own healing mechanisms

Know this: We are at a critical time in history where we are being called upon to be far more conscious consumers and realize the source and motives of the media we take in.

I’m incredibly grateful for the privilege to have a platform to share messages like the one today that may not always be the most popular but are so necessary.

After you’ve listened in, I want to hear from you:

What did this episode bring up for you? What did you learn? Did it cause you to question anything that you’ve held as truth so far?

I found this discussion interesting right up to the point where the conversation shifted to vaccinations. I had a very hard time with your guests’ credibility at this point, because here’s the thing: While we should all be allowed freedom to make decisions about our own lives and bodies, we are not and cannot allowed to make decisions that negatively impact or endanger others, and that is exactly what choosing not to vaccinate yourself or your children does. I found it interesting that this was the point in the conversation where all references to science went out the window and talk of “mytho-poetic concepts of good and evil” and intense fear mongering about ”the state” “forcibly penetrating our children” began. Measles, polio, mumps, etc, are not fairy tales, and treating them as such has very real and dangerous consequences for other people – especially the most vulnerable. If someone wishes to reference the Handmaid’s Tale there is plenty of reason to do so in this day and age, but it is more appropriate to do so in a context of the control and domination of women’s bodies and reproductive health, not because “the state” won’t allow you to take advantage of free public education, allowing your unvaccinated child to endanger others. For those that do not wish to take advantage of the proven protective benefits of vaccines, that is still an option available to them. They can home school, or start a co-op with other like-minded individuals, or some other creative option. If that’s not possible or palatable, then that is the rubber-meets-the-road moment where hard choices must be made, because other children and vulnerable populations should not be put at risk of serious illness or death for other people’s desire to exercise their freedoms. Put this in the context of the gun debate and see how it translates. You want to take a shotgun and go hunting far out in the woods away from people? Okay. You might shoot yourself, but if that’s a risk you’re willing to take, go for it. You want to carry a loaded weapon into a classroom full of children? Now we have problem.

THANK YOU FOR BEING BRAVE and putting this information out there. It actually brings tears to my eyes. I was part of the psychiatric merry-go-round for YEARS because I was told I would be medicated forever due to my eating disorder, anxiety and depression. I WORKED for the pharma world for 15 years and in the last years before discovering my real passions in food and nutrition, I had a mental breakdown and knew medication wasn’t going to get me through it any longer – as it really never had worked. I had to make a change. I had to get deep and dig into my soul – my past, my present and my traumas. I am now fighting to keep my kids’ bodies THEIR own and in school. I am pro-informed consent and know deep within my heart and with every fibre of my being, I will fight until the day I die to give my kids their body autonomy. No governing body will ever tell me how to parent and I will make the choices I have to to keep my kids and their bodies safe. These are important messages today for everyone to hear and Dr. Brogan is a phenomenal messenger. Thank you, Kate and Mike, for using your platform to bring this information to light.

    • Kate Northrup

Thank you so much for listening in Heather. I’m thrilled that you’ve found your way back to yourself and are guiding your kids around consent, as well!

  • Elaine

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have followed Dr. Brogan’s work now for a few years and I’m so glad you are sharing it! The world needs to here this stuff!

  • This podcast is so very important. Thank you with all my heart for having the courage to speak up and to speak out against the corruption. Bravo!!!!
These are the conversations that people need to start having. I cannot have these conversations with some of my best friends who are in mainstream medical healthcare. The rhetoric is tired, old, and outdated. It’s time to rise up. You’re doing the work we’re being called on to do.

    • Kate Northrup

Thank you for listening Marny – these are indeed not easy conversations but we do need to have them when we can and since we have a platform, I feel it’s our responsibility to spread the word!

  • Cara

I loved this episode! It is such an important conversation to be had!! Especially for women who will be going through the birth process and then (often) making the healthcare decisions for their children. Pediatricians should be FIRED for not providing informed consent. They work for us!

  • Kelly

It was a great podcast! Continue being brave! This is the kind of information we all need to be faced with, learn about other alternatives and then make truly informed decisions. The current system gives us options that are profitable for corporate shareholders, but not necessarily in our best interests. Only we can decide what best serves our interests.

  • Somer Serpe

Thank you so much Kate and Mike for bringing Kelly’s work to us. I cried hearing the canary in the coal mine description. My beautiful, sweet sensitive daughter who has been raised holistically all her life, suffers from fibromyalgia, anxiety and now depression. When she was in high school her anthroposophical doctor asked if she could “see” things. She has always been incredibly empathetic. As a 20 year old college student studying to be a child psychologist, she has chosen to go on meds and struggles with all that Kelly just spoke about. A lack of self love and a belief that she has a chemical imbalance keeps her searching for the right meds and accepting prescriptions without question.
After suicidal thoughts and brief hospitalization last month, she was put on 6 yes, 6 different meds. It breaks my heart and soul to see her struggle and she feels I don’t acknowledge her brain chemistry when I suggest there are alternative ways to heal.
My daughter has so many gifts for the world, I am hopeful that Kelly’s work might help her see how important she is and how important it is to honor herself! I think we can all learn that again and again!

PS: Thank you Kate for your inspiration a few weeks ago! I am in DCA and can’t wait to work with you when I’m done!

    • Kate Northrup

Oh Somer – I’m so very sorry to hear about your daughter’s struggle. I hope that she finds the help she needs to truly heal.

  • Laura

This is so timely for me. I’m haven’t been a fan of pharmaceuticals for a long time. But I’ve also been, what I feel like is, seriously depressed for months now. I’d recently been considering finding a therapist to see if I needed medicine to help with the depression. This reminded me that what I need to look at (first, also?) is what I am eating/drinking and how it might be affecting me.
This feels pretty serious to me right now so while I may still need to contemplate a pharmaceutical solution, I first need to make an appointment with my naturopath.
    Thanks for the reminder.
PS I, too, will need to listen to this again…

  • Emily

Hi Kate & Mike – I have just got round to listening and loved the episode. Much of it was not new to me but understanding the extent of the issue was. I am in the UK where we don’t get direct advertising from the drug companies (I left the pharmaceutical corporate industry 18 years ago too btw & never looked back!) but our GPs are worked on hard to prescribe far too readily. It is so important that we talk about this – not to make people angry but to make us educated.
I am not quite there on the vaccinations question however. I need to understand what the alternative is. As an asthmatic it is also very difficult to say no to my annual flu jab too. My nurse basically says that it would be irresponsible for me to not have it….there is some way to go!
Keep talking Kate & Mike and thank you xxx

  • Holly

I am only halfway through the episode and I absolutely love it. I understand how it can be so controversial, especially when she was first going down this road. I have been very blessed to have providers that share similar mindsets as Dr. Brogan. I just wish more providers and people understood these things. Thank you for having her on and sharing her wisdom.

  • Liz

I love listening to this episode. I can see from above comments what she mentioned about vaccines is very controversial. I happen to live in Maine and also hesitate whenever we go for vaccines but do not feel educated enough to say no (with exception to the flu shot) and want to protect my daughter in every way possible. I thought there was mention of some resources in your conversation but I don’t see them listed. Is it possible for you to provide them?
