3 Simple Steps to Avoid Burnout When You’re Self-Employed

Today is a special day because I have the last episode of Financial Freedom Friday to share with you!

So many people go into business for themselves because they want freedom. And owning your own business is one of the best ways to create time and financial freedom.

But here’s the problem: working for yourself often leads to working ungodly hours, busting your butt to make everything happen, and trading hours for dollars.

I’ve watched a lot of self-employed friends get totally fried and lose the spark of passion for their business.

And you know what? That’s a bummer. Because running your own show and having creative freedom is one of the best ways to be of service and get your amazing gifts out into the world.

So, what’s an entrepreneur who wants the freedom of working for themselves to do?

How do you get the passion that you had in the beginning back if you’re feeling burned out now?

And how do you prevent getting burned out in the first place?

Well, I’ve got 3 simple steps you can take to avoid getting burned out when you’re self-employed. Plus, I’ll tell you about two business models that are particularly burnout-prone and which you might want to avoid or modify in order to create freedom.

  • Kate’s money knowledge and her love for our building our own financial freedom has me snapping my fingers along with her video music. Love you back Kate!

  • Great video Kate! I just understood why I wasn’t sure anymore about being an entrepreneur! I need to change te way that I work and create something instead of coaching 1on1.
Love your book by the way, it’s a game changer !

Wow–I’m currently using both the coaching model and the ongoing launch model. :/ I see why you say there are limits to how much one can make as a coach, I guess I’ve just been so far off from experiencing that that it doesn’t seem true to me. :p On the other hand, I have no interest in taking time off to do something that won’t generate me any income. :) I want a business that’s centered around me. It’s good to know that. The launching will end by February, so my biz isn’t contingent on it. Thanks for all the great info you’ve offered this year, glad I’ve been in the know!

I’m going to miss Financial Freedom Fridays (sniffle), but I’m so profoundly grateful for these vids you made. They were so insightful and I’ve really learned a lot. Thank you and I wish you loads of fun on your next adventure :)

  • Great info…I am sharing it on my fanpage! All health coaches should hear this.

my husband & i own a catering company and i can attest to the truth of burnout when the whole thing revolves around & depends on you to continually bring dollars in. the video rang true to be sure but i didn’t feel like the question of what to do to bring the spark back was really answered! i am waiting on pins & needles to hear inspiration on that one so we can turn our business from the mom & pop style to the freedom style!

Hi Liv – great question and apologies for not answering it completely in the video. I would go through and answer all those questions that I posed in the video and see what you come up with. Take a look at your business model and see how you could add some leverage in there (earning multiple times for each customer you serve and/or each hour you work). Study business models outside the catering world to see where you can get inspiration. Read Rich Dad, Poor Dad and see what types of ideas you get. Those are all great places to start!

  • Is the end of FFF a sign of burnout? I think it begs explanation. Maybe a lesson on giving up one thing for something better? Or focusing in on what’s really important means giving something up? Or it wasn’t worth the time investment? Maybe I’m off here. All I know is I’ll miss it.

  • So on the last day of the year, I had a session with my coach and as we talked about my “next steps” what eventually the conversation evolved into was that no matter how good your plan is, it won’t work if you have a block: Coaching 101. So this meant, I had to deal with my money block, most of us have one. Mine: “can’t be abundant doing something I love” even though I have made progress, getting to true abundance needed me to pay attention and do some work. My homework assignment was to work on my block for a whole week. So no DOING (meaning working on projects, creating more, learning more) really just focusing on healing this block. I knew in the back of my mind that I would have to do this, this is what I teach – just goes to prove student first, always! So as I started to choose my affirmations “the more money I make, the more I can help people”, “I deserve abundance”, etc. There was one that was a trigger “my parents want me to be happy” even as I write this, I still get a little teary eyed. The real block/issue, is that I feel guilty being happy. Why? Well in my eyes, my parents had a hard life and for me to be effortlessly abundant feel like in some way I am being disloyal, crazy right? Not really -it’s pretty common, whether you realize it or not. Many of you play small because you don’t want others to feel bad – it’s true! My parents have long passed yet, in some ways I am still seeking their approval. My logic minds know they would want me to be happy – but that very influential subconscious mind believes otherwise. So I have to really work hard to retell that story and I have and in less than a week, I have already seen the results! Just by bringing awareness to your subconscious beliefs in itself helps clear a lot of the block. And then as I was choosing my guided meditation as I always do, I randomly choose and ask for guidance to choose the message I need to hear at the moment. I chose a mediation with the mantra “as I raise my abundance consciousness, I do my part to heal the world” – how much more fitting could that be? It feels right, and thats the thing about a mantra or an affirmation – it has to feel right and be believable otherwise the limiting beliefs wont’s rewire. Another tool I used was something else that I very much believe to be true but still forget to practice which is “what you desire is what God/source/universe desire, so do what you want, everyday!” I woke up with the desire to go shopping and to go to barnes n noble to read (used to always do this). Logic told me I should “work” on my business. It was not easy and it took me a while to get out but I followed my desires. I barely ever shop anymore but I had such a blast and really got some good stuff, it felt good to decorate my new body and then I headed to BN and read Kate Northrup “Money a Love Story” as I am committed to healing this block. Realized some more about my story”money is about sacrificing” and I don’t feel “I deserve nice things”. That evening I got 2 phone calls with money making opportunities in line with my desires. This stuff works, really. Face your limiting beliefs and do what you want, try it and see the magic!! For those dealing with the snow – hope you are enjoying it!!
