Despite writing a book called Do Less, my toxic trait is that by default, I always feel drawn to do more.
Confession: I wrote my book for me ❤️. (Good news: boat loads of other people have found it useful too!)
In the last 18 months, though, we’ve really hit our stride in business. After 5 years of being at a revenue plateau, we’ve broken our revenue records the past 2 years and we’re on track to do it again this year.
So, what changed?
Well, a lot of things…but one of the most important things?
I stopped scattering my energy over a lot of different offers, many of which were new and never to be repeated, and we chose one thing to focus on.
Even typing that makes me squirm. Focus is my kryptonite. I’m a 7 Enneagram and my greatest strength and biggest weakness is how easily I get excited about nearly everything.
If focusing on one thing feels like part of you is trapped (like it used to be for me), keep reading.
I came up with a way to satisfy the part of me that craves variety and constant newness while still being able to reap the compounding benefits of an elegant, simple marketing system and offering suite.
And I’m about to tell you how!
Before I reveal my hack to make focusing way more comfortable – and even downright pleasurable sometimes, there’s something we need to address:
The reason some of us have trouble focusing is because we’re addicted to distraction.
The chaos of constant new creation keeps us numb on some level and allows us to avoid the discomfort and painful emotions that tend to bubble up when things are more calm.
The good news about the fact that so many of us are unconsciously distracting ourselves to avoid the initial discomfort of stillness is that the more we learn to signal to our bodies that we’re safe (aka regulate our nervous systems) the more we increase our ability to focus and tolerate the stillness and ease of streamlining our businesses.
And! A simplified, streamlined business model brings in more money!
So beyond increasing my capacity to sit with the discomfort of stillness (which I may tackle in next week’s Dispatch so stay tuned), here’s how I’ve managed to satisfy my creative urges without distracting myself, our team, and our customers.
Instead of satisfying my longings for newness by creating new offers, I’m satisfying my need for the new by infusing our proven marketing system and proven flagship offer with creativity.
What does this mean exactly?
New branding and messaging for the free workshops that are part of the launches (including photo shoots I use as a ritual to step into the launch portal)
Adding new stories and messaging angles to our email sequences and social media posts
Always continuing to learn more about money, energetics, psychology, and the nervous system so that the content is always new and improved with more and more depth
You know what else?
It’s ok to use our creativity for things that don’t bring in revenue.
In fact, it’s beautiful!
For example: I recently discovered the design power of adding trays for little beautiful “moments” throughout my home and had so much fun styling surfaces.
If you live for variety as I do, I highly recommend not making your business the primary way you get your need for the new met.
Rinsing and repeating (with plenty of improvements) has been the greatest strategy we’ve used to compound results and make more money with less work.
May we expand our capacity to sit with stillness and get our need for creation satisfied to reap the rewards of both.
Xo,
Kate
