Panic in the Great Pyramid: Finding Safety, Choice, and Pleasure in the Unknown

It’s been decades since I’ve had a panic attack—but there I was, deep inside Egypt’s Great Pyramid, with my heart racing and the walls spinning.

We’d just climbed a narrow passageway to the King’s Chamber. My breath was short, the air was still, and I felt my nervous system slip into survival mode.

Despite all my grounding tools—breath-work, movement, hugs—my body was overwhelmed. I quietly told our guides, “I’m panicking.” They met me with calm eyes, grounded presence, and gentle reminders to breathe.

After a few moments, I began to return to myself. Then I bumped my head against the stone wall, and—snap—I was right back in my body.

Inside the King’s Chamber, the air was hot and heavy. My fear rose again. I laid down on the sandy floor, hands on my belly, trying to find safety within. Around me, others chanted softly—a sound bath of human voices echoing through ancient stone.

And then it dawned on me:

I’m a grown woman. No one is keeping me here. I can choose to leave.

That realization shifted everything. When I remembered my agency, my fear dissolved. I could breathe again. I could think clearly.

Because here’s the truth: when we forget we have choice, we’re operating from survival. When we restore safety, choice becomes visible again.

That’s the whole practice—whether we’re navigating business, relationships, or travel inside ancient pyramids.

Safety first.
Then choice.

Then pleasure.

When I finally stepped outside that night, the desert air was cool and delicious. Our guide reminded us:

“No one gets to sit on the pyramids like this. It’s a privilege. Enjoy it.”

And so we did—laughing, sharing stories, and soaking in the moment.

It wasn’t the panic that defined the experience. It was remembering my power, my pleasure, and my agency within it.
