How to Streamline Your To Do List

I don’t know if you also have this problem, but I used to use my to-do list as a holding place for everything I could think of that I should or could do, ever.

I thought that putting everything in my brain on paper would help quell my anxiety, but instead it only made it worse.

Every day I would transfer the things that I didn’t get done (which were plentiful) to the next day and then add new things.

By the end of the week I felt overwhelmed, like there was never enough time, and worse, like there was something wrong with me.

I thought if I could just be more organized or find the holy grail of time management systems, I would someday figure out how to get it all done.

And then I had kids. Suddenly I didn’t have the time and attention I’d once had for my work. The way I was working had to change.

I started streamlining my to-do list by asking myself 3 incredibly simple yet powerful questions about each item before it made it onto the list. I started treating my to-do list as a sacred space as opposed to a dumping ground.

    Kate…this is wonderful! I have a tendency to dump everything in my head onto the “to do list”. I mean even 5-year goals. Talk about creating stress! So now, between you and Jim (he said that three things should be prioritized for the day and may not be completed especially if they are like designing new prototypes or writing a book (few examples). Since I am a solo Artist/Designer time management and DELEGATION are so important. Now, I have the perfect questions to ask to avoid overcompensation or just plain overwhelm. Thanks Kate!
