What is A Regenerative Company? 4 Living, Breathing Examples from The Origin Company

What is a regenerative company?

We’ve been over here creating something completely new for you. It’s a live program that I’m delivering called Regenerative Business and it’s been stretching and nourishing us as it’s come to fruition.

(Enrollment closes 4/14 at 5pm ET. Learn more here.)

The program is based on an exploration I went on with 8 women of the Origin Mastermind last year.

We collectively asked the question:

How can we run our businesses in ways that are regenerative to every aspect of our business ecosystems?

What is a regenerative company

The answers that presented themselves surprised and healed us and delivered unexpected results in our lives and businesses beyond what we’d anticipated.

If you’re reading this, it’s likely because you, too, are answering the call to look beyond traditional work models that prioritize profit exclusively and that usually do it through extraction.

Let’s start with the word regenerative.

The root word is the Latin generat which means “create.”

So we’re talking about bringing something into form here.

Then when we add in the prefix re, we add again, anew to the meaning.

Regenerate then means to create anew.

When we ask what a regenerative company is, then, the simple answer is something like this:

A regenerative company brings life to something anew.

But what does that actually mean? What is a regenerative company in the landscape of day-to-day operations?

I think the answers to this question could be infinite and as individual as there are species of life on Earth (current estimation is 8.7 million, only 10-14% of which humans have identified so far.

For the sake of tangibility, though, I’ll offer some examples from The Origin Company, knowing that this is a living, breathing exploration and we’re in the process of evolution, healing, and growth every day.

Regeneration is a process. It’s a cycle. There’s never a moment where we’re done.

4 Examples of Regenerative Business from Inside The Origin Company

  • We orient around what is life-giving.

How the team feels matters. How our customers feel matters. How I feel as the Founder/Visionary matters. Steamrolling over human needs (emotional, physical, etc.) is the status quo in so many systems from government to finance to medicine. Caring about how your work impacts the human beings involved is radical and regenerative. Being conscious of the nervous systems of everyone involved is paramount.

  • Allowing our Company’s DNA to be our compass.

Our company values, what we stand for (including our commitment to DEI) are part of our company’s DNA. So is the way my purpose of plugging women back into their power weaves its way through our work here. So are the purposes of every person on Team Origin. We know that we’re not here to be everything to everyone and allowing our Company’s DNA to guide us helps us not spread ourselves too thin, helps us save time making decisions, and helps us know where to devote our precious time, energy, and other resources.

  • Looking to the natural world as a guide for models of sustainable abundance.

We are nature, even though many of us forget this fact most of the time. Whether we’re looking at our creativity and productivity through the lens of our cyclical nature or taking seasons of completion and integration inspired by what’s going on outside our offices, we know the best guidance for creation doesn’t come from the human mind. It comes from the pulse of life force that keeps us all alive and in this wondrous biological dance.

We look at compost, biodiversity, healthy soil, mycelium, seasonality, symbiosis, just to name a few, as inspiration for how we can approach our day to day business.

  • We celebrate invisible and visible results.

The biggest, fastest growth doesn’t always sustain or renew the pulse of life. When corn has a period of really fast growth, for example, its stems can grow really weak, making them fragile and easily bent by strong winds. Deep roots, plentiful nourishment, and strong networks of shared resources and mutual support can’t always be seen but are essential to being around for the long haul so that a company can keep infusing its ecosystem with life anew.

These are just some of the regenerative business practices we embody at The Origin Company. The precise ways each of these plays out operationally on a day-to-day basis, from how we run our team meetings to how we lay out projects to how we map and execute launches is inside Regenerative Business.

Part of our Company’s DNA is our value of “Challenging the Status Quo.” Whenever we perpetuate an old, extractive business practice because we’re unconsciously following the models of those who came before us or we’re throwing up our hands and saying, “Well, that’s just the way it is,” we’re missing an opportunity to breathe new life into the way we do things.

The way we work is so ripe with opportunities for healing and regeneration and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of this conversation and practice with you.

Which one of the examples of regenerative business practices above speaks to you the most? What other examples can you think of from your own business or from businesses you interact with? We’d love to hear from you!
