I really wish people would be more transparent about money. It would save us all so much time, energy, and grief.

When we tell the truth we set ourselves and those around us free. (Click to Tweet.)

Telling the truth (to myself and to others) about my own financial situation was the catalyst that helped me pay off over $20K in debt, double my income, and double my savings within one year.

But I’m not the only one whose financial life has been transformed by telling the truth.

Sandra Hanna is the CEO of Smart Cookies, a company dedicated to helping women live a richer life through earning more, spending less, and ditching their debt.

Several years ago, if you’d asked Sandra if she thought she’d wind up teaching people to be smart with money everywhere from the Today show to The Oprah Winfrey Show, she would have thought you were nuts. That’s because she was living with her parents, trying to pay off her debt and save up for a house.

But then kismet intervened and a work friend of Sandra’s who looked like she had everything together confessed that she herself was in a bit of debt. The two got together with some other friends from work and started going through the Debt Diet that they’d seen featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

They disclosed everything to each other, from their debt to their salaries to their spending. And they supported one another in getting smart with money.

What happened next was nothing short of miraculous, but I’ll let Sandra tell that story.

I had a chance to chat with Sandra last week and she filled me in on how she went from being in debt and living with her parents to being an author, running a brag-worthy company, owning her dream home, and creating a life she loves with her husband and two adorable kids.

Over To You:

How have you prepared financially for a major life transition like having a baby? Have you tried telling the truth about your financial situation to someone safe like Sandra and her friends did? What happened? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!
  • Gina says:

Thank you once again for your insight! Always so on point. My most major life transition is giving birth to my passion and life purpose. I left my full time gig to do so, and surrendered to the knowing that money is solely energy, and I will be safe. I have read Money A Love Story and that has really been helping me to stay in the mindset and be prepared!! LOVE!

  • Melissa Carr says:

I am so excited to hear another Mom promoting re-using the baby gear instead of buying new! The Just between Friends sale is awesome! I am so inspired to get my list together of debt to tackle so it is not just floating around. Getting a new mindset on debt, and what is REALLY needed in life is a better mindset on what REALLY matters in life.

  • Clara says:

Thank you so much for sharing this interview Kate! I love your Glimpse TV episodes!
Women coming together to work through challenges like Money is huge. Thank you!

  • Kate….. This is rocking my world. You are rocking my world. The work you do is everything I want to do in this lifetime. I know with all my heart that the peace of the planet will come from healthy families and most importantly healthy mothers. I only wish I knew what I know now 11 years ago before I had kids. I wouldn’t change a thing though, I’ll use my struggle to heal the lives of many. thank you for paving the way.
